This is the result when actors optimise their supply chain operations – their own assets – for themselves. This basically means supply chain managers want to make processes more efficient by cutting out costs. Lean and mean supply chains work as long as there are sufficient available resources in the system, but have failed dramatically. The point is that nobody in a privatised system wants to own assets (equipment, chassis, trucks, personnel) and when this is the case, the alternative is to either set up a shared pool of resources or to treat them as public goods. The latter option is far-fetched for a highly capitalist society such as US, but there is a shared problem at stake where individual options have failed. Time to act for the shared interest of all and do something with the pool of resources.
